The male nude was the first great subject in Western art when it appeared in the archaic Kouroi of ancient Greece around the 7th century BC. In the 18th and early 19th century it was still considered the central theme for art students’ examinations when it was simply called an “academy”.
The triumph of the female nude in the 19th century and the modernist assault on academic drawing in the 20th then reduced the male nude to a minor and disregarded genre in mainstream art. It survived a little better in Socialist or Fascist realist art and in photography where its heroic or erotic potentials were still exploited.
In the present exhibition Galerie Beckel Odille Boïcos would like to demonstrate that the male nude is alive and well in all media - drawing, painting, sculpture, classic and digital photography, installation - at the opening of the 21st century and has indeed profited from the return of figurative themes in international art of the last few years.
Classical themes and poses prove extraordinarily resilient in the Satyrs presented by Ettore Greco and Emmanuelle Mellot, the reclining nude in Vivian van Belrk’s Et in Arcadia Ego, the gracefully twisting poses of Alain Clerc-Ourgan’s nudes, or in the museum galleries of Lionel Tréboit’s oils. A romantic sensibility is apparent in the nature themes of the photos of Alain Galet (the Nus paysages) and Jennifer Lund (the Nus végétaux). A more traditional virility and mythic eroticism is on the other hand the theme in the work of Ipoustéguy, Pavlos Habidis, Andrea Boyer and Ronald Bowen’s seductive Seated Youth.
Standing and reclining, still and in motion, youthful and mature, aroused or romantically languid, the works in NU au masculin sing the beauty and power of the male body as an eternal theme of desire and vitality in art.
